The Elections That Hurt the Most Are the Ones We Care About the Most: The Values We Stand By

As the election dust settles, I am reflecting (like all of you) on the results and grappling with the losses. In elections, the losses we feel most deeply are the ones closest to our values—the ones that remind us why we fight in the first place. For me, this is one of those elections because this loss touches so close to those things for which we stand. These values keep us grounded, shape our union, and drive our shared mission. I want to take this time to honor these values and remind each of us why we continue to press forward together.

The Value of Community Colleges

Community colleges are the safety net of higher education, serving as both a gateway to opportunity and a lifeline for those in need. We are the educators, the staff members, and the advocates on the frontlines. Our students come to us from all walks of life, seeking a path toward a better future. Every day, we witness firsthand the transformative power of community college education. We see our work’s impact on students’ lives and the opportunities they create for their families and communities. This is the reason we engage in the political sphere as we seek partners who will expand this opportunity.

The Value of Organized Labor as a Path to a Better Life

Chicago is the birthplace of the labor movement, and we proudly carry on this legacy. We know that organized labor is a pathway to a better life, not just for ourselves but for every worker who dreams of fair wages, safe working conditions, and dignity on the job. Through union solidarity, we raise our voices collectively to advocate for a fairer world. Our labor movement is rooted in the understanding that together, we can challenge inequities and bring about change. Local 1600 stands as part of a larger struggle that stretches back through generations, linking us to those who fought so we could have the rights we enjoy today. Our commitment to this cause gives us purpose, even when the fight gets tough.

The Value of Democracy

As a union, we are an embodiment of democracy. Our structure is built on democratic principles, giving each member a voice and ensuring that our collective decisions reflect the will of the group. We foster a workplace culture that respects differing opinions and upholds the ideals of fairness, transparency, and accountability. Democracy isn’t always easy, and sometimes we face setbacks. But even in the face of adversity, we know that by working together, we can find solutions that reflect our shared values. Our commitment to democracy keeps us grounded, connected, and resilient.

The Value of Diversity and the Richness of the American Tapestry

Our strength lies in our diversity. As educators and union members, we know that every perspective adds to the richness of our shared experience. We embrace our differences and seek to understand one another, knowing that this understanding makes us stronger. Our union is a reflection of our nation’s vast diversity, and we are proud to represent individuals from all backgrounds and experiences. When we welcome the outsider and give shelter to the immigrant, we create a more inclusive and empathetic world.

The Value of Equity

Diversity alone is not enough. We must also seek equity, ensuring that everyone has fair access to opportunities, resources, and respect. Equity means addressing systemic barriers and making sure that each individual is supported to succeed, no matter their background. In our work as educators and union members, we strive to create an environment that fosters both fairness and opportunity. Equity is a commitment to justice and an acknowledgment that we have more work to do to ensure that all voices are heard, valued, and empowered. This pursuit of equity strengthens our union, our institutions, and our communities.

The Pledge We Make to Each Other

As a member of Local 1600, I’ve made a pledge—not just to the union, but to each of you. This pledge is a promise that I will stand by you. When we face challenges or disagree, I commit to listening, understanding, and working with you to find solutions that honor us all. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it requires real courage and patience. But that’s what makes this union strong.

It is my hope that all of us are bound by this pledge, because we know we’re stronger together. Whether we’re fighting for fair wages, supporting a colleague in need, or standing in solidarity during difficult times, this pledge reminds me that I am never alone—and neither are you.

We are in the midst of a difficult time as forces that threaten us loom large. But we must stand together and take stock in the values that make us who we are.
